If you’re going to criticise Monty…
…then please make it constructive criticism relating either to his ability as a golfer or his decisions as Ryder Cup captain. There’s no value, surely, in childish sniggering and finger-pointing simply because of an individual’s physique or mannerisms. Isn’t that the kind of behaviour we should all have left behind in the school playground?
I’m not in 100% agreement with Monty’s decisions - I would have probably picked Casey over Harrington - so I am not suggesting that people don’t have the right to criticise him. Just wondering whether those criticisms could be kept relevant and reasoned.
As a golfer, Monty enjoyed an unparalleled period of dominance in the European Tour. His consistency was amazing, and his seven consecutive OOMs in the 1990s will possibly never be repeated. And this, remember, was not at a time when the European Tour was ‘weak’ - Europe regularly beat USA at Ryder Cup in this era featuring players predominantly competing week in week out in Europe. His unbeaten singles record at Ryder Cup and his five runner-up spots in Majors illustrate a golfer of extremely high calibre.
If you are a golf fan and not a image-obsessed celebrity tittle-tattle junkie then this man has surely earned your respect. You don’t have to like him or agree with him, but please think carefully before you insult him.
